New Delhi, May 12 (IANS) Thirteen years after the case began, Runu Ghosh, former deputy director general in the telecom ministry, was Tuesday convicted by a city court for corruption during the tenure of former union minister Sukhram.
Special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) Judge V.K. Maheshwari convicted 57-year-old Ghosh for amassing assets disproportionate to her known sources of income.
The court will hear arguments on the quantum of punishment Wednesday.
Ghosh, a deputy director general (licence and finance), was tried under the Prevention of Corruption Act for acquiring assets to the tune of Rs.2.27 million.
The CBI alleged that Ghosh had acquired jewellery, costly household items, a flat, a house-cum-shop and and share certificates while abusing her position as a public servant from Nov 1, 1992 to Aug 16, 1996.
The CBI had unearthed disproportionate assets to the tune of Rs.2.271 million from her residence on the same day when it recovered Rs.24.5 million in cash from the then telecommunications minister Sukhram's houses.
In a separate case, Ghosh, along with Sukhram and Ramarao, managing director of the Hyderabad-based firm Advance Radio Masts (ARM) Ltd, had been convicted by a Delhi court in July 2002 for causing over Rs.16.8 million loss to the state exchequer by awarding a contract to the firm.
Her appeal against a two-year jail term is pending before the Delhi High Court.
