MP minister who threatened woman officer arrested

Madhya Pradesh Tourism Minister Tukoji Rao Pawar was arrested on Tuesday for intimidating and threatening an election officer.

Finally, action has been taken against the minister who threatened to sack an administrative officer after she refused to cancel a rival candidates' nomination.

BJP's Pawar has now been booked for obstructing administrative work and intimidating an officer in her own office.

The MP had threatened to sack the officer for disobeying him.

PTI adds: The Central Election Commission on Tuesday ordered that an FIR be registered against the BJP leader for allegedly threatening and intimidating a woman returning officer while discharging her official duties.

The EC direction to the Chief Electoral Officer to file the FIR came hours after Sanjana Jain, the returning officer for Sonkatch assembly constituency in Dewas district in poll-bound MP, filed a police complaint against Pawar.

The complaint that she was obstructed from doing official work and intentionally insulted was lodged in a local police station in Dewas.

Pawar, who also looks after Sports and Youth Welfare in BJP-ruled MP, was caught on camera throwing a paper in a fit of anger and apparently intimidating the official during a meeting at her office.

The incident happened when Pawar had a dispute with Jain on November 8 when he had gone to meet her to complain against Sajjan Singh Verma, the Congress nominee from Sonkatch in connection with filing of nominations.

The administration had in its possession a video recording of the meeting capturing the deliberations between Pawar and Jain and given as evidence.

The EC also transferred Navneet Mohan Kothari, the Deputy Electoral Officer of Dewas, for dereliction of duty by not bringing the minister's misbehaviour to the notice of the CEO and the Commission. Kothari will also face departmental proceedings, official sources said.

The FIR must be registered under sections 186, 353 and 504 of the Indian Penal Code, the EC said in New Delhi.

Impressed by the woman official's action to file a police complaint, the EC decided to issue a letter of appreciation to her for resolutely withstanding " pressure, threatening and intimidation."

Section 186 relates to preventing a public servant from discharging his public functions.

Section 353 relates to assault or use of criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging his duty while 504 deals with intentional insult with an intent to provoke breach of peace. Both are punishable offences carrying maximum punishment of two years imprisonment.

Pawar, who also looks after Sports and Youth Welfare in BJP-ruled Madhya Pradesh, was also seen apparently intimidating the official during a meeting at her office.

The incident happened when Pawar had a dispute with Jain on November 8 when he had gone to meet her to complain against Sajjan Singh Verma, the Congress nominee from Sonkatch.

The administration has in its possession a video recording of the meeting capturing the deliberations between Pawar and Jain and given as evidence.
